Acai Berry Juice
In Brazil, as well as in other Central and South American countries, the acai palm is cultivated for its fruit. The acai berry is small, round, and black-purple, about 1 inch in circumference, smaller than a grape and with less pulp. The berry was only recently introduced to the United States in early 2000s. Using celebrity names like Oprah, Rachel Ray, and Dr. Oz, and playing on the public’s demand for weight-loss secrets and healing benefits, manufacturers profit from their promotions of acai berries, powder, juice and pills. The acai is considered by some to be nature’s perfect food and the top super food for age-defying beauty.
What to Look for in Acai Berry Juice
Consumers should opt for acai berry juice that is deep purple in color, which indicates that it is as close as possible to the actual dark purple acai berry. Avoid acai berry juice that is light red in color. Acai berry premium blend juice is a type of acai juice that has typically only been diluted a small amount with water or another juice. Acai berry juice is designed for everyday consumption. Simply drink it when desired, or in place of other fruit juices, soda pop, or other beverages.
Get the Good Stuff
Acai fruit is not formally regulated in the United States. As a result, there is not yet an organized standard for the quality of its juice, and many brands make claims that may not be supported by facts. This means that the quality of the acai berry juice you buy can vary considerably from supplier to supplier. Some of the most popular types of premium acai berry juice available include Sambazon, Acai Roots, Dynamic Health and MonaVie.
Acai Berry Juice and Weight Loss
Those hoping to lose weight by following an acai berry juice diet are urged to drink four glasses of acai berry juice each day – one before each meal – breakfast, lunch and dinner – and one before bed. By drinking acai berry juice periodically throughout your day you may feel full after each meal, get you an energy boost and increase your metabolism so that you lose weight faster. The claim is that acai berry juice “tastes good so you will not mind drinking it four times per day.” It’s hard to say if acai berry juice really causes weight loss than any other juice but if it replaces soda or another unhealthy drink it should help.
Where to Buy Acai Berry Juice
Acai berry juice can be hard to find in stores but it is becoming more common. One reliable place to buy acai berry juice is from Amazon.com. Dynamic Health sells a 32-ounce bottle of Acai Gold, organic 100% pure acai berry juice for about $24. The company claims that besides increasing energy, stamina, vitality, and promoting overall healthy living, “commonly reported benefits of Acai Juice include: Promotes weight loss, Improves mental clarity, High antioxidant content, Combats premature aging, Helps increase energy levels, Helps to bolster the immune system.” If you don’t want to shop online, a 59-ounce jug of acai berry juice is sold at Sam’s Club stores, but not available online. Tropicana and V8 Fusion also market acai berry juice blends. Whether you are shopping at your local grocery store or a health food store, be sure to read the nutritional labels to note that up to ten or more ingredients may include cane juice, grape, pomegranate, elderberry and even sweet potatoes.
Evidence of Acai Health Benefits?
No acai products have been evaluated by the FDA. Beware of unfounded claims that acai and its antioxidant qualities provide a variety of health benefits, since there is no scientific confirmation to date. False claims include reversal of diabetes and other chronic illnesses. Increasing size of the penis and men’s sexual virility has even been attributed to acai.
Although acai does contain antioxidants, the average antioxidant capacity was ranked lower than that of pomegranate juice, Concord grape juice, blueberry juice, and red wine. The average was roughly equivalent to that of black cherry or cranberry juice, and was higher than that of orange juice, apple juice, and tea. As of April 2012, there were no scientifically controlled studies providing proof of any health benefits from consuming acai.
Acai Side Effects
WebMD sums up their caution about acai berry juice by warning, “If you have pollen allergies or have a known hypersensitivity to acai or similar berries, you may want to avoid this fruit. When eaten in moderate amounts, though, acai is likely safe.” Ask a doctor before using acai berry supplements for health issues and weight loss. Although no side effects have been reported from the use of acai berry products, they should not replace other types of medical care.
